Summer School

CALL FOR PAPERS/POSTERS

euRathlon/SHERPA SUMMER SCHOOL 2015 ON FIELD ROBOTICS

Oulu, 1-5th June 2015

The euRathlon/SHERPA Summer School 2015 has been designed as a five-day course to provide participants with a full overview and hands-on experience with multi-domain real robotic systems. The intended audience is undergraduate students, Master students, PhD students, postdoc students, researchers from universities/organizations and engineers from industry companies around the world.  The summer school will provide an opportunity for attendees to deepen their understanding of outdoor autonomous robotics, to share ideas and experiences, and also to prepare themselves for euRathlon competitions.

The summer school are jointly organized by EURATHLON (www.eurathlon.eu/) and SHERPA (http://sherpa-project.eu/) EC FP7 projects.

We invite submissions which on topics of unmanned ground, air, sea vehicles and their combination on real systems. We are stressing real applications on:
-    Sensor fusion for autonomous navigation.
-    Control of autonomous vehicles.
-    Path planning and guidance.
-    Processing of on-board sensors data for achieving specific tasks.
-    Cooperation between multi-domain robotic systems.
-    Robotic manipulation.

We welcome papers from non-competitors if they are within the scope. We encourage especially young researchers to participate. There will be the possibility to earn study credits (doctoral or basic) from the summer school. For European Union’s (EU) students we also provide the possibility of getting travel support.

euRathlon project is aimed at organizing outdoor multi-domain robotic competitions which invite teams to test the intelligence and autonomy of their robots in realistic mock emergency-response scenarios inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident. euRathlon competition will require a team of land, underwater and flying robots to work together to survey the scene, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards. In parallel, there will be an open process of developing benchmarks to allow comparison of different robots in the euRathlon competitions.

The goal of SHERPA is to develop a mixed ground and aerial robotic platform to support search and rescue activities in a real-world hostile environment like the alpine scenario. A mix of advanced control and cognitive capabilities characterize the SHERPA system, aiming to support the rescuer by improving his awareness of the rescue scene even in tough environments. The emphasis of the project is placed on robust autonomy of the platform, acquisition of cognitive capabilities, collaboration strategies, natural and implicit interaction between the rescuer and the robotic platform.

Submission guidelines

Applications should be submitted via email in PDF format to Prof Juha Röning (). All applicants must provide a free format letter (max. 2 pages) describing their research. Papers/posters are not compulsory for attending the summer school, but participants who have submitted a paper will have priority over participants who haven’t submitted one.

For the review, the material for the papers/posters is asked to be provided in the form of short paper. Submissions should be no more than 4 ISO A4 pages long, including figures, tables and references. Please to use IEEE format, templates are available in:

Latex: http://ras.papercept.net/conferences/support/tex.php

Word: http://ras.papercept.net/conferences/support/word.php

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 40. If more applications are received, participants will be selected based on: the submitted papers/posters, date of application, work area and background.

European Union’s (EU) students have the possibility of getting travel support. To apply for a travel grant make a free format application giving reasons why support should be given to you. (Include your curriculum vitae and a description of ongoing research related to field robotics. Selection criteria include applicant’s motivation and capability for successfully entering the competitions in the future.)

Applications of participation and travel grant should be submitted via email in PDF format to Prof Juha Röning ().

Note: participants who have submitted will have priority over participants who haven’t submitted one. (Attendance and travel support)
